No more smoking, ever, in Oregon schools

(Portland-AP) - The Oregon Board of Education has approved a rule that bars smoking or chewing tobacco on all school property at all hours, beginning in 2006.

Prohibitions against smoking at school already are entrenched. This makes it official.

Officials in Oregon's education or health departments say they have no evidence that smoking is being tolerated at any public school.

Yet a survey of about 20,000 eighth- and 11th-graders, taken last year, indicates that about 15 percent reported seeing a teacher or other school employee smoke on school property during the previous year.

A survey of school districts, taken within the past two years, found that about 45 percent did not have a written policy prohibiting tobacco use on school property at all times. Most of the districts were small rural districts.

This is fine by me. I think it's a load of crap that high schoolers are not allowed to smoke but the teachers are allowed to hot-box the teachers' lounge. Either let everybody do it or let nobody do it. And since the teachers are supposed to be some kind of example, they shouldn't be using tobacco on school property at all. If they don't like it, they can go find another profession.

Once when I was at school (this is less than 10 years ago) one of the teachers tried to extinguish his cigarette in his waster-paper basket, and set the fire-alarm off. We were just happy to get a ten minute break during the evacuation.

Dang it. The day after I turned 18, I should have lit up a cigar right in front of the principal. Oh well. Another thing to chalk up to being a wuss.:)

Sitting in the classroom Thinking it's a drag
Listening to the teacher rap Just ain't my bag
The noon bells ring You know that's my cue
I'm gonna meet the boys On floor number two!

Smokin' in the boys' room
Smokin' in the boys' room
Now, teacher, don't you fill me up with your rules
But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school.

A-checkin' out the halls Makin' sure the coast is clear
Lookin' in the stalls No, there ain't nobody here
Oh, my buddy Fang, and me and Paul
To get caught would surely be the death of us all

Smokin' in the boys' room
Smokin' in the boys' room
Now, teacher, don't you fill me up with your rules
But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school.
All right!

Oh, put me to work In the school book store
Check out counter And I got bored
Teacher was lookin' For me all around
Two hours later You know where I was found

Smokin' in the boys' room (Yes indeed, I was)
Smokin' in the boys' room
Now, teacher, don't you fill me up with your rules
But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school.
One mo'!

Smokin' in the boys' room
Oh, smokin' in the boys' room
Now, teacher, I am fully aware of the rules
But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school!

(And twice so in Oregon....)

Hysterical!

In the city where I live this has been the policy for years, but they have pushed the gay lifestyle on the kids. It's appalling what goes on in the 2 high schools.

No butts smoked,but

everything old is new again. in the fifties and sixties only the black leather jacet kids smoked...at school. now the schools don't want even the outcasts to have bad habits.
